Chapter Eleven

Pearl’s telephone conversation with Charlie on Tuesday morning was strained – for one thing because her son was naturally concerned that a mysterious death had marred what was meant to be a well-earned break in the countryside, but also because he knew there was a risk that his mother might well become embroiled in the ensuing investigation.

‘Why can’t you come home?’ he asked. ‘You’re not under house arrest or anything, are you?’

‘No,’ she said. ‘But for now it helps the police if we all remain here in one place at the villa. It also helps to contain the news, so please don’t mention any of this until the police issue a media statement.’

‘McGuire, you mean,’ said Charlie. ‘He’s in charge of this?’

‘That’s right.’

Charlie was quiet for a moment as if computing this news.

‘Good,’ he finally replied.

‘You approve?’

‘Of course,’ said Charlie brightly. ‘He knows you.’ Then: ‘Let him deal with this and don’t get involved, Mum.’

‘Who said I would?’

‘I know you too well. Please just listen to what he says, stay out of trouble and look after Gran.’

Pearl smiled at her son’s list of instructions. ‘As long as you promise to let me know if there are any problems at the restaurant. You will tell me, won’t you?’

‘I promise,’ said Charlie.

Charlie had a wide circle of friends in Canterbury but as McGuire lived there too, Pearl always felt glad that there was someone nearby he could turn to in a crisis – and what better contact could a young man have at such a time than a member of the local CID?

Having split up with Charlie’s father before her son was born, Pearl was aware that, one day, Charlie’s curiosity might be piqued sufficiently to ask for more information about his dad – perhaps even with a view to tracking him down, though that was one investigation which, for now, Pearl would rather remain closed.

Over the years, she had dated various men and been set up on blind dates by friends but had never felt anything to match the white hot heat of that summer romance with Carl, a romance that was perhaps too preciously preserved in her memory for real life ever to eclipse it, although her feelings for McGuire were real enough. There was chemistry between them but, having experienced the same with Charlie’s father – moments of passion snatched together in Whitstable all the while knowing that Carl was about to move on – Pearl now wondered whether this was a pattern she was allowing herself to fall into. McGuire was a man who was clearly keeping himself at an emotional distance so perhaps this made the times they had come together feel all the more intense? If so, Pearl was now
